A Fight For Freedom Rosa Parks and Mahatma Ghandi Essay
Throughout history, there has been injustice caused by discrimination and oppression. But with that unfair treatment comes leaders who fight difficult battles for the rights of the persecuted and downtrodden. Two of the most influential advocates for equality are Rosa Parks and Mohan-das Gandhi. Parks fought for African-American equal rights, which was a crucial step in the bat-tle for integration in the southern United States. Gandhi led thousands of people to peacefully protest the unfair treatment of Indians by the British. Parks and Gandhi helped end discrimination through their participation in boycotts and marches. He encouraged people not only to grow cot-ton, but also to create and sell their own khadi. As the British began losing jobs and customers, their economy was undermined. With Gandhi as a leader of this passive resistance, Indias econ-omy was revitalized. Both Parks and Gandhi believed that people could peacefully obtain the po-litical and social changes they wanted through boycotts. Parks and Gandhi used marches as a way to significantly diminish social injustices. In 1965, Selma, Alabama was made the center of the quarrel over the rights of black voters in the South, assisted by Parks and Martin Luther King Junior. In March that year, protesters attempting to civilly march from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery were confronted with violence by the authorities. The Selma marches were protests that marked the climax of the American civil rights movement. At the same time, entrepreneurship represents people who are driven to act on opportunities and environmental catalysts in the face of limited resources. At its core, entrepreneurship is starting a business from idea conception to managing the company for the long term. There is no doubt that entrepreneurship deserves the reputation for the reason that it has the level of freedom of which traditional managers can only dream. ( Morrison, 2000) In order to inquire entrepreneurship deeply, this article illustrates two essential parts to analysis entrepreneurship. The first aspect is giving the concept of entrepreneurship including the explanation of entrepreneurship and discussing whether entrepreneurship is aroused from nature or nurture. The second part is considering the value of entrepreneurship. Part one: the concept of entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship can be explained into various approaches, including economic approach, personality approach and other approaches. In this part, the article put emphasis on the economic dimension and personality dimension to analyze the features distinguished entrepreneurs. The role of entrepreneurship is embedded in the mainstream economic models. Considering the direction of causality between entrepreneurship and economy, it can be proved that economic development generates many opportunities which can transform new ideas and create the new enterprises. On the contrary, the creation of new industries and the innovation of existed firms which stimulated by entrepreneurship may stimulate the economic growth. Therefore, entrepreneurship can be regarded as both the cause and effect of economic development. From an economic perspective, the measure of entrepreneurship is the contribution of new firm formation. Entrepreneurs are more than a business man, they are the speculative trader which is skilled to put forward new ideas, grasp the opportunities and combine the effective management with innovation in the risk and uncertainty background. When starting up a new enterprise, there are a number of jobs available can be generated. When facing with the economic slump and financial crisis, entrepreneurs can drive the company get out of the trouble by seizing opportunities and making innovation. There comes a conclusion that the entrepreneurs as the agent of economic change so that it makes huge contributions to economic growth. ( Oscar, Javier Pablo, 2009) It is far from enough for explaining the entrepreneurship in economic rationale. Economic perspective ignores the special human abilities and differences in human values, capabilities and power of human will result in different practical solutions. Therefore, it is essential to take the personality into account. Personality traits aim to using the characteristics of individual to explain the differences of individual actions when facing the similar conditions. Personality traits also explain the behaviors of entrepreneurs. There is no doubt that the individual personality of entrepreneurs stimulates their passions, social interactions and creativeness. In order to give a deep understanding of entrepreneurship, there are several traits which have a close relationship with entrepreneurship. ( Littunen, 2000) Innovation is the soul of entrepreneurship. Hampered by uncertainty and limited resources, entrepreneurs should to reply the variety agile efficiently and become creative in facing the challenges. Since the essence of entrepreneurship is doing the different things rather than making something better, the lack of innovation will result in the decline of enterprise, even perishing. In the point of view of CEO Zhang Ruimin, entrepreneurship is the creative destruction, if the enterprise attempts to make great achievements, there is a need for enterprise to destroy themselves, and otherwise they will be destroyed by other firms. Thus, recently, Haier put forward an idea that enterprises should be adapt to the demand of epoch development other than willing to success. Haier relies on the pursuit of innovation perseverance by the means of setting up an independent operation mode of the win-win body successfully become a leader in the industry. ( Okpara, 2007) Adventure is the nature of the entrepreneurial spirit. Facing with the potential risks and uncertainty, it is impossible to possess entrepreneurship if lacking of adventure. It is said that you must kiss a large number of frog to find the princess. It means that entrepreneurs should have to experience setbacks and failures in order to be success. Liu chuanzhi is the representative of entrepreneur in china. Although he has been relieved from this office, he still keens to start new businesses. Regardless of facing risks and many challenges, he intends to transform Lenovo into an enterprise which produces enterprises. It can be drawn that entrepreneurs have the spirit of adventure and dare to be the first one. (Hadji, Cocks Mueller, 2007) Social vision is the key to entrepreneurship. Social vision can be regarded as a strong sense of obligation and destiny to satisfy human needs. Possessing social vision promotes entrepreneurs to find the opportunities and act as an agent of social age. Li kaifu, the CEO of Innovation Works, stress that entrepreneurs should spare no effort to produce more social returns. He proves himself through actions. September 4, 2009, Kaifu Lee resigned from Google to run his Innovation Works as an angel investor and create new models for society by his huge influence. Li kaifu has the sense of obligation and aspiration to make contribution to social and economic development by creating new business and innovation. Whatââ¬â¢s more, there are many other characteristics which are associated with entrepreneurship such as locus of control, determination, and trusting and trustworthy. When entrepreneurship attracts publicââ¬â¢s attention, there is a heated debate aroused about whether entrepreneurship is caused by nature or nurture. You read "Concept and Value of Entrepreneurship" in category "Papers" Some groups believed that genetic factors existed to drive people to engage in entrepreneurial activity. There is no doubt that some kinds of specialities are people born with, such as the innovativeness, adventurous and locus of control. These characteristics are determined by genetic factors rather than training or other environmental factors. It is insisted that genes may have an influence on chemical mechanisms in the brain so that people maybe more willing to pursue entrepreneurial activity. Genes also affect individual characteristics which can make entrepreneurs different from others, such as people who possess characteristics of innovativeness and locus of control are more likely to throw themselves to the entrepreneurial activity. ( Kroeck, Bullough Reynolds, 2010) Genes entrust people the ability to be more sensitive than others to environmental stimuli, it means that entrepreneurs are easier than others to master the social change in order to prepare in advance. Whatââ¬â¢s more, genes may make people to good at find favourable factors and opportunities to ensure the company development. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to find a simple formula or entrepreneurship that can be trained, the specific characteristics and habits possessed by the successful entrepreneurs was inherent. ( Kenney Mujtaba, 2007) However, some groups take the opposite view that entrepreneurial leaders are made rather than born. They consider that there is hardly existed entrepreneurship gene for the reason that the majority of entrepreneurial leaders start at a young age. According to the survey, about 33% of the entrepreneurial leader said that working in the corporate environment makes essential contribution to the success of their business. At the same time, 45% of entrepreneurs establish their own businesses after the age of thirty. Although there still have young entrepreneurial leader, it is no doubt that the knowledge they acquire in the college and the personal experiences through the corporate and social environment are essential to their success. In spite of the young age, over a half of entrepreneurs regarded themselves as the ââ¬Å"transitioned leaderâ⬠for the reason that they have spent a much time in the traditional employment before starting their own business. The education and experiences lay great foundation on the entrepreneurs. It can be concluded that entrepreneurs are aroused from both nature and nurture. Some unique characteristics of entrepreneurship which include creativeness, locus of control and risk-takers are born with and can not be taught, these characteristics make the entrepreneurial leaders apart from the traditional managers. Nevertheless, becoming successful entrepreneurs and running the business successfully in the long term are not simply requiring the specialties, but also depending on the combination of internal and external factors, consisting of education, timing, culture, social environment and sometimes luck. Part two: the value of entrepreneurship Almost without exception, entrepreneurship brings a lot benefits to individual, companies and society. Most importantly, entrepreneurship indeed generates great economic benefits so that it should be attach importance to. Actually, entrepreneurship is regarded as a challenge for people. It requires people to break the traditional thinking of managers and become the risk-taker and create a new business. Although it may be difficulty for people due to the lower median incomes and more volatile and less secure, entrepreneurs could earn self satisfaction and rewards which is an opportunity for them. At the same time, developing the entrepreneurship can generate self sufficiency which can create the wealth. According to the top ten popular entrepreneurs in china which is ranked by Forbes, consisting of CEO Ma huateng in Tencent, CEO Ma yun and other entrepreneurs, the aim of ranking is to make entrepreneurship internationally respected and admitted. Therefore, facing uncertainty risks and challenges, entrepreneurs are still willing to create their own business and achieve their values. Firth Mcelwee, 2009) Entrepreneurship also plays the dominant role in the enterprise development; it is the major source of the enterprise core competitiveness. The core competitiveness of enterprise is regarded as the extension of entrepreneurship and it can be reflected by the visionary and vigorous leader. As being the unique position in company, it is important for entrepreneurs to take responsibility of risk activities such as the organization innovation, management innovation and value innov ation. For example, in 2002, Huawei was facing the challenge of lacking of technology advantages and entering the cyclical downturn, CEO Ren zhengfei carried out the deep reform which includes industrial restructuring and internal restructuring and finally enterprise met the success. It proved that entrepreneurship does not simply constitute the internal driving force of development, but also become the external development opportunities. Entrepreneurship makes huge contribution to the social development, especially in economy. Entrepreneurship generates a large number of employment opportunities by the establishment of new business which is treated as a significant input to economy. It is also improving the level of productivity by boosting the GDP rates or tax contributions. Moreover, entrepreneurs are able to create many innovations which promote the boom of inventions the world would have been a much dry place to live in. Especially in recent years, China is experiencing the economic downturn influenced by the global economic crisis; it is in urgent need of entrepreneurship to promote the economic recovery. Sun mingnan is the represent of the generation of 80s, which was the most attractive young entrepreneur in Summer Davos, his successful experience proved that young entrepreneurs attach importance to the economic development in China. ( Santo, 2012) Above all, entrepreneurship has substantial value, it is increasingly treated as a vital driver of economic, productivity, innovation and employment development, and it is believed to be a key aspect of economic dynamism and a key factor to determine the birth and death of firms and their growth and downsizing. It is also promoting the self satisfaction and sufficiency. Since creating a new business and participating in self-employment has become a common activity in the world, entrepreneurship is widely recognized as the major drive in economic growth. After the basic analysis of entrepreneurship among the economic and political ways, as well as whether entrepreneurship is caused from nature or nurture, it can be concluded that entrepreneurs indeed have some kinds of characteristics which are born with, also need the knowledge and experiences. Combined with both nature and raining, entrepreneurs have the ability to make contribution to individual, enterprises and the society. In a conclusion, entrepreneurship is deserved for both people and government to pay attention to. Due to the crisis experienced at the beginning of the century, they were forced to improve their production, modernize and diversify it. Throughout the case we can see like Alex Cameron solves the problems of beginning, to the point of starting to recover economically the company, The situation had changed, and now the problem was that Cameron parts could not satisfy the demand, they dont have the production capacity for it. The companys market position in North America began to improve, and 50 they Egan to think about foreign markets. As the problem remained the lack of productive capacity, a bargain with McGrath Supplies Ltd started, and Cameron Auto Parts give them the license of the production if flexible couplings due to the impact that they might have products in the LLC_K. The problem With Cameron Auto Parts was that they Willing to deliver their products themselves, make a direct deal with the customer and make strong the brand by their their own, but since that did not have the productivity capacity, it was necessary to license But McGrath Supplies Ltd did not have the genealogy, and feared that they might give bad image to the product and thus could not perform well the production process. The lack of capacity at its production plant because its market is centralized mainly on the IS,S, market, and since they now have to start exporting they need to expand the plant also acquiring new technology to meet the new requirements. The European markets is completely new for they and they didnt have the necessary information of it, so they need to make a market study and then segment the target market and measure their socioeconomic level, in order to know if their customers have the ability to purchase. All this operation would generate more costs to the company. Another important point that Cameron must take care is ballot tithe currency rate risk, they work with the currency U. S. , but they dont not know how the exchange rate fluctuates in the European union, for what they have to know how to handle all costs and whether it will be able to make a profit at the end of the operation. However, only few have knowledge about this fortress; most of them are well-known personalities and government functionaries who have access to the place. Common or ordinary Filipinos have no information, unfamiliar and not interested on this important asset. Gracefully standing in one nook in the Bay Area is the Grand Dame of all Philippine Hotels, the Manila Hotel. Built in 1909 and opened to the public 3 years later, the Manila Hotel is a good reminder to the countryââ¬â¢s colonial past as well as of days of a bygone era, of knightsà andà maids, of gentlemen and ladies, of taste and temperance, ofà quality and urbanity It was in the tenure of Governor General William Howard Taft when the beautification and planning of Manila were undertaken under the supervision of top architect and DC city planner, Daniel Burnham. Tasked of overseeing the development of Manila and Baguio, Burnham prepared a master plan for Manila that was slowly implemented. Some of the remnants of this master plan are the restored Neo-Classical corridor found along Roxas Boulevard (formerly Dewey Boulevard). In the same plan was the proposed construction of the Manila Hotel. However, it was Architect William Parsons who would make the Manila Hotel a reality. A graduate of Parisââ¬â¢ Ecole des Beaux Arts and a former professor of architecture at Yale, Parsons led the construction of the Manila Hotel. Built in the ââ¬Å"California Missionâ⬠style, the Manila Hotel was basically a large, white-washed concrete house with a pitched roof colored green. Designed for the tropics, the steep roofs were built for the good interior ventilation as well as the easy run-off of rainwater. As one drives up the circular driveway leading to the main entrance, the guest enters into the grand lobby. Its original lobby (which is presently the restored Manila Hotelââ¬â¢s fore-lobby) was huge during its time and was gracefully appointed. The entire lobby was white and was accentuated with lush tropical green plants. Supported by twin white Doric columns, and separated by exquisite arches, the lobby showcased two grand stairways. The twoà grand staircases led to the mezzanine where a music room, guestsââ¬â¢ parlor, and Childrenââ¬â¢s dining room were found. The Childrenââ¬â¢s dining room was a very Victorian hallmark, which helped the adults in having comfortable and ââ¬Å"worryâ⬠-free meals. The Manila Hotel was also the first Asian hotel to sport electric elevators. There were two elevators in the lobby, one for each side. There were also two private elevators and a servantsââ¬â¢ elevator. The main dining room of the pre-war Manila Hotel spanned from the left end of the lobby towards the direction of the bay. It was semi-circle in order to insure each guest of an uninterrupted view of the majestic bay. Surrounded by an open veranda, the room was high and was witness to many lunches and snacks to so many of the old hotelââ¬â¢s guests. Parsonââ¬â¢s also employed traditional Filipino materials, a manifestation of is respect for the local beauty of native things. The floors consisted of wide planks of local hard woods. The windows made resembled the traditional provincial Filipino house, with four-inch squares of naturalà capiz. These were used to soften the vicious tropical sunââ¬â¢s rays (unfortunately, these were later replaced by conventional steel and glass windows). The beds had metal frames but many pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables were made of rattan, bamboo and grass fiber. The lobby was full of ââ¬Å"peacockâ⬠white-painted rattan chairs, comfortable chairs that also gave a sense of grandeur to anyone who sat on those chairs. Nevertheless, Filipinos should be the first to know and should be the first to visit, see and experience the place. Unfortunately, majority can only see it on magazines, televisions and hear it from the radio. This study will help us learn more on the details of its design and on the manner of its preservation. Likewise, John Humble defines MBO as a dynamic system which seeks to integrate the companyââ¬â¢s need to clarify and achieve its profits and growth goals, with the managerââ¬â¢s need to contribute and develop himself. It is a demanding and rewarding style of managing a business. This principle basically applies in the management of the Manila Hotel as an important assest of the government and how it contributes to the Filipino culture and influence tourism industry in this country. Theoretical Paradigm The MBO concept is the most widely accepted philosophy of management today, as it emphasizes team work result and, is based on the assumption that people perform better when they know what is expected of them and can relate their personal goal to organizational objectives. This is very much applicable in the present dispensation of running the Manila Hotel where the team from the National Government from the executive department or from the Department of Tourism. MBO is a participative and democratic style of management provides subordinates higher status and positive participative role, making MBO both a philosophy and a management approach. Likewise, it allows people to control their performance, measure themselves and exercise self-control. Furthermore, it is a result-oriented philosophy that offers many advantages like employee motivation, high morale, effective and purposeful leadership and clearly defined objectives. Thus, MBO is gainful to this study for the reason that the objectives served as a guide for planning the work, setting priorities and evaluating performances. All of these have significance to this study and its application is vital to successfully determine the perceptions of tourists on the Manila Hotel as an important asset of the government and its contribution to development. The social and economic Theory of Hagen holds that there is a direct relationship between societal change and personality change of people and change must start an individual to attain the much awaited societal change and reforms. Behavioral and attitudinal changes and values formation among people are key elements that will bring reforms and economic progress. A positive viewpoint of the tourists of Manila Hotel could lead to their patronage and support to the tourism industry through social and societal and economic development aspects. Therefore, the behavior and attitude of the tourists influenced the Filipinos culture and industry. Procedural changes and adjustments give impetus for the government to synchronize efforts on tourism development programs with the doctrines emanating from the Department of Tourism to attain success, growth and maturity in managing government resources. While there may be significant changes and modifications in the tourism schemes and practices, these will produce better results in the end, both to the government and tourists. Viewed as a business process and prospect, the tourism administration must be founded on the ideals behind quality to achieve economic gains and excellence, making tourism industry as one of the centerpiece of revenue-generating schemes. Another theory that supports this study is the Total Quality Management (TQM) formally known as total quality control emphasize the crucial role of management in the quality process. Total means that everyone participates and that it is integrated into all business functions. Quality means meeting or exceeding customer (internal or external) expectation. Management means improving and maintaining business systems and their related process or activities. Milakovich and Gordon (2001), defined total quality management aslt; ââ¬Å"A management approach that encourages organization wide commitment, teamwork and better quality results by providing incentives to increase the success of the whole enterprise. Elements of TQM include commitment to meeting customer-driven quality standard, employee participation or empowerment to make decisions at the point closest to the customer, actions based on data, facts outcome measure, results and statistical analysis, commitment to process and continuous quality improvements, and organizational changes and teamwork to encourage implementation all of he above elements. Total quality anagement gives support to the present investigation because there is a need for people to get involved in the management of the Manila Hotel to be committed and rational team player to attain better quality tourism industry. Finally, the Systems Theory greatly influenced this study which originates from Bertalanffyââ¬â¢s General System Theory (GST), used in the action theory of Talcott Parsons and the system-theory of Niklas Luhmann. System is used to refer specifically to self-regulating system, in effect, it is self-correcting through feedback. Self-regulating systems are found in nature, including the physiological systems of our body, in local and global ecosystems, and in climate ââ¬â and in human learning processes. Relative to this, Manila Hotel is considered self-regulating as it is inherent upon the government as an autonomous entity. Tourism industry is an investment vested upon the state in order to support its continued existence and sustain the needs and deliver the services to the public. In this context, a system from this frame of reference is composed of regularly interacting or interrelating groups of activities. It was recognized that organizations arte complex social systems, reducing the parts from the center of individuals, structures, departments and units separate in part from the whole instead of recognizing the interdependence between groups of individuals, structures and processes that enable an organization to function. Laszlo explains that new systems view that organized complexity went one step beyond the organized simplicity in reducing the parts from the whole, or in understanding the whole without relation to its parts. The relationships between organizations and their environments became recognized as the foremost source of complexity and interdependence. Bela H. Banathy, argued that the ââ¬Å"benefit of humankindâ⬠is the purpose of science, has made significant and far-reaching contributions to the area of systems theory. She defines a perspective that iterates this view. The systems view is a world-view that is based on the discipline of systems inquiry. Central to system inquiry is the concept of system. I the most general sense, systems mean a configuration of parts connected and joined together by a web of relationships. The Primer group defines a system as ââ¬Å"elements in standing relationshipâ⬠. The Manila Hotel has been offered to tourists for the benefit of mankind. Statement of the Problem This study aimed to determine the perception of tourist on Manila Hotel and itââ¬â¢s contribution to the Filipino culture. Objectives of the Study Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the tourist, in terms ofâ⬠2. 1 Age 2. 2 Gender 2. 3 Nationality 2. What is a Good ACT Aspire Score For a Freshman
What is a Good ACT Aspire Score For a Freshman SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Itââ¬â¢s tempting to compare the ACT Aspire test to the PSAT, but in reality they are quite different in their goals and purpose. The PSAT is meant to be practice for the real SAT, and doing well on it can qualify you for theNational Merit Scholarship. On the other hand, the ACT Aspire is a test for 3rd to 10th gradersthat is meant todetermine whether students are measuring up toCommon Core standards. Just like the real ACT, the ACT Aspire covers English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing. But the format of this test, the structure of the questions, and the way the test is scored are all very different from the ACT. So how do you know what ACT Aspire score you should aim for in your freshman year of high school? Or if you already got your results, how can you tell where you stand compared to your peers? In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll talk about how the ACT Aspire is scored, give you some different ways to think about what a good ACT Aspire score is for a 9th grader, and demonstrate several tools to use when thinking about your specific score. How is the ACT Aspire Test Scored? Scoring is slightly different for the different grades that take this test, so I will speak specifically about how ACT Aspire is scored when you take in high school. Right now, scores can range between 400 and 460 for each subject, depending on your grade level. This means that while the lowest possible score is 400 no matter what grade you're in, the maximum possible score goes up with each year that you take the test. In 10th grade, the last year the ACT Aspire is given, the maximum score is 460. In grades 8ââ¬â10, your results will include a composite score, which is just the average of the scores you got on the English, Math, Reading, and Science sections of the test. Meanwhile, the Writing section is scored separately. Your results will also come with a few other measurements: one for language arts, one for STEM, and one that evaluations your reading comprehension. To get a sense of what all of this will look like, you can check out a sample score report. Whatââ¬â¢s a Good Freshman Score on ACT Aspire? What you consider a good score depends very much on what your goal for that score is. I will go through some possibilities of what the ACT Aspire score can show you, and discuss what constitutes a good score in each of those cases. Comparing Yourself to Yourself Because ACT Aspire is given to everyone from 3rd graders to 10th graders, after a few years, you will be able to see how well youââ¬â¢re doing on this test compared to all the other times youââ¬â¢ve taken it. The idea is that in each subject area, your scores should increase from year to year. So part of figuring out a good freshman score is tracking your progress to make sure that you are improving from one year to the next. At the same time, your scores should also be hitting the benchmarks set out by ACT. The benchmarks are basically the minimum scores that you need to get to show that you are performing at grade level. The point of these minimum scores is to show you, your teachers, and your parents whether you are on track for college readiness, and whether there are specific subjects where you could benefit from academic support. Here is a table of the ACT Aspire benchmarks for each subject: So for example, this table shows that on the math portion of the ACT Aspire, you can get a score anywhere between 400 and 460. If you get at least 428 as a freshman, youââ¬â¢re considered to be learningat grade level. Comparing Yourself to YourPeers Another thing that nation-wide tests like the ACT Aspire are supposed to do is give you a sense of where how your level ofacademic preparation compares to your peers. ACT Aspire publishes data about how students taking the test scored, so we can go through the data to see how you can tell where you stand when compared toother 9th graders who took the test at the same time as you. Some have it easier than others when comparing themselves to their peers. Using Composite Scores for Comparison One way to see how you stack up is through your composite score ââ¬â the average of yourindividual subject scores (minus Writing). This number is a very quick way to see your relative ranking overall, without taking into consideration whether you are better or worse that some subjects than others. Here isthe range of composite scores for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders from the last year the ACT Aspire was administered: Grade Min 25% Rank 50% Rank 75% Rank 90% Rank 95% Rank Max 8 406 414 418 423 428 432 435 9 408 414 418 423 430 435 438 10 409 415 419 426 433 438 440 This table gives us a breakdown ofhow students scoredon the test. The "Min" and "Max" columns show the lowest and highest scores earned on this test. The "% Rank" columns show the score you'd need to reachthe given percentile, i.e. the score at which you'd be scoringhigher than that percent of other students. So, for example, 9th graders earned composite scores anywhere between 408 and 438 (thatââ¬â¢s the minimum and maximum score columns). If you got at least 414, you did better than 25% of the 9th graders taking the test, which would put you in the 25th percentile of scorers. Meanwhile, if you got a 435, you fall into the top 5%, since you scored better than 95% of students. What can we learn from this table? For 9th graders, 418 was the medianscore - 49% of students did better, and 50% did worse. What's a good freshman composite score for ACT Aspire? Letââ¬â¢s assume that a good score is roughly at or above the 75th percentile ââ¬â meaning, scoring higher than 75% of your peers. This means that a good composite score for the ACT Aspire for freshmen is 423 or higher. The mix everything together approach: great for paella, less useful for test scores. Using Individual Test Sections forComparison The composite score is a good tool for very quick analysis. But another, probably more useful, way of comparing yourself to your peers is to dive into each section of the test individually. Not only is this a more precise ranking system, but it also helps you figure out which subjects are your strengths, and which you need to work on more, or maybe even get some outside help. Now, let's investigate the test sections one by one. We can look at exactly what percentile you fall into depending on yourscore. ACT Aspire 9th Grade English Percentiles Score % Rank Score % Rank Score % Rank Score % Rank 400 1 415 13 430 57 445 96 401 1 416 15 431 61 446 97 402 1 417 16 432 65 447 98 403 1 418 19 433 68 448 99 404 1 419 22 434 71 449 99 405 1 420 25 435 74 450 99 406 1 421 28 436 77 451 99 407 2 422 30 437 80 452 99 408 2 423 33 438 82 453 99 409 3 424 37 439 84 454 99 410 4 425 40 440 87 455 99 411 5 426 43 441 89 456 100 412 7 427 47 442 91 413 8 428 50 443 93 414 10 429 54 444 94 One thing to look at right away is that you donââ¬â¢t need to get all the questions right in order to fall into the top 1% of students. Although the exact number will change slightly from year to year, on this version of the ACT Aspire anyone who got above 448 on the English section did better than 99% of test takers. The benchmark English section score of 426 would put you at the 43rd percentile, meaning you scored better than 43% of your peers. Keeping our assumption that a good score on this test is on or above the 75th percentile, we can see that getting 435 or higher puts you in at least the 74th percentile, making this a good score. ACT Aspire 9th Grade ReadingPercentiles Score % Rank Score % Rank Score % Rank Score % Rank 400 1 411 11 422 57 433 95 401 1 412 15 423 61 434 97 402 1 413 16 424 62 435 99 403 1 414 21 425 66 436 99 404 1 415 26 426 71 437 99 405 1 416 30 427 75 438 99 406 1 417 34 428 80 439 99 407 2 418 39 429 84 440 99 408 4 419 43 430 89 441 99 409 4 420 47 431 89 442 100 410 8 421 52 432 92 You can see a similar thing about the Reading section results ââ¬â quite a few of the top scores would put you in the top 1% of people taking the test. Also, notice how big a difference in the percentile rankings just one point makes. If you earned 428, you are in the top 20%, but if you earned 429, you are in the top 16%. The Reading benchmark that ACT, Inc. determined is 425, or better than 66% of test takers. A good score on the Reading section ââ¬â a score around the 75th percentile ââ¬â is 427. The ACT Aspire benchmark for this section is 428, or the 69th percentile. Meanwhile, a good score in the 75th percentile is 430. For one thing, you can see here that the lowest score on this section isnââ¬â¢t 400 like it is for all the other sections, but 408. Here, the benchmark score from ACT is 428, or better than 71% of everyone taking the test in that year. Meanwhile, a good score on Writing is at least 430, which is in the 76th percentile. Does the ACT Aspire Predict Your Future ACT Score? One of the reasons you may be wondering how well you did on theACT Aspire is that you want some kind of assurance or prediction that youââ¬â¢ll do well on the real ACT when you take it junior or senior year. The truth is thatACT Aspire is not a particularly great predictor of your future accomplishmentsââ¬â at least as far as your ACT scores are concerned. But this is actually fantastic news! First of all, it means that the ACT Aspire really does what itââ¬â¢s supposed to do ââ¬â it shows you where you are now and where you need to improve. And second,it means that dramatic improvement is possible because, as a freshman, you have 2 or even 3 years in which to do it! The ACT Aspire is the weathervane of tests: it's really good at telling you what's happening now, but not really able to predict the future. How ACT Aspire and ACT Scores Compare ACT published a spreadsheet with score data on 50 10th grade students ââ¬â what they got on each ACT Aspire section, and what they went on to get on the actual ACT when they took it in 11th grade. While it's true that this data is about sophomores rather than freshman, it's still useful to check out what it can tell us. The spreadsheet itself is rather unwieldy, so I've created a couple of graphs to more easily point out the salient bits of information. First, let's talk about the overall trends that the ACT's data shows. In general, the higher your score on the ACT Aspire, the more likely you are to get a higher score on the real ACT itself. Here is a graph that shows this tendency by taking individual scores and smoothing them out into trendlines: However, this is only part of the story. Another way to parse this data is to look more closely at an individual subject. For example, here is a scatterplot graph of a piece of the same data, comparing how 10th gradersdid on Aspire Math and how they ended up doing on ACT Math. The way the scatterplotgraph works is this: Each blue diamond point representsone student Ifyou gostraight down from the diamond, you can see what this student got on ACT Aspire Math If you gostraight left, you can see what this same student got onACTMath: What can we learn from this more zoomed-in approach? On the one hand, as the scores from Aspire Math increase (x-axis), the scores on ACT Math also tend to get somewhat higher as a group (y-axis). In other words, the swarm of diamonds goes upward as we go from left to right. This what accounts for the way the Math trendline appears on the graph above this one. On the other hand,we can see that your Aspire score is by no means destiny, no matter where in the score range students fall. For example, the 3 students who got434 on ACT Aspire Math (just above the sophomore "good" score in the 72nd percentile), ended up getting ACT scores between17 (approximately in the bottom 30%) to 26 (approximately in the top 15%). What Does This Mean in Terms of a Good Score? I think the best way to think about your scores if youââ¬â¢re worried about eventually taking the ACT is to: First, make sure youââ¬â¢re meeting your 9th grade benchmarks. Thatââ¬â¢s a pretty good indicator that youââ¬â¢re on track with your learning. Next, think about your ACT Aspire section scores. If there is one section (or several sections) that you are scoring significantly worse in, then this is the time to get extra help with these academic subjects. Should You Study For the ACT Aspire? Itââ¬â¢s certainly a very good idea to get some exposure to the test itself. In order for any test to be an accurate reflection of your knowledge and abilities, you shouldnââ¬â¢t be penalized just for being unfamiliar with the testââ¬â¢s format and structure. To that end, you should definitely read ourdetailed breakdown of what the ACT Aspire is like and the kinds of questions youââ¬â¢ll face on it. You should also get a sense of what taking the ACT Aspire will be like from their sample questions and computer test simulator. Go to theACT Aspire exemplar page, where youââ¬â¢ll find a link to the simulator and login information for all test sections and grade levels. But honestly, beyond getting a basic sense of what youââ¬â¢ll see on test day, I donââ¬â¢t think it makes a lot of sense to study for the ACT Aspire. For one thing, this isnââ¬â¢t like the PSAT ââ¬â no scholarships or awards are resting on the score you get. Also, the point of the test is to see whether you are where you should be in your learning. If you study specifically for the test, you could throw off these results ââ¬â which would be a problem if you actually need help in a specific test area. Finally, the ACT Aspire isnââ¬â¢t just a diagnostic test for individual students. Itââ¬â¢s also supposed to measure how each classroom is doing as a whole. Imagine, for example, that the ACT Aspire results come back and every single kid in your class bombed the Writing section. This will tell your teacher and school administrators that they really need to beef up the schoolââ¬â¢s writing program. And this in turn will benefit you down the road, when you learn how to write college-level work. If you are really very worried about your future testing results, youââ¬â¢re better off justtaking a practice ACT instead. Itââ¬â¢ll more accurately show you how youââ¬â¢d score if you took the ACT now. One possible thing to do instead of studying for the ACT Aspire. The Bottom Line The ACT Aspire tests the same 5 sections as the ACT, but is structured, formatted, and scored very differently. Youââ¬â¢ll get scores for each of the sections individually, as well as a composite score that averages English, Reading, Math, and Science. What is a good ACT Aspire score depends on what you are trying to determine. A good score for personal progress is a score thatââ¬â¢s higher than your previous score and one that meets ACT Aspire benchmarks. A good score when comparing yourself to your peers is around the 75th percentile ââ¬â the actual number is different for each ACT Aspire section. ACT Aspire is not very good at predicting ACT scores. Instead, it shows you subject areas where you need extra help. There is no need to study for the ACT Aspire, though it would be a good idea to get familiar with the test format by checking out their sample questions. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Cubic centimeters and liters are two metric units of volume. Cubic Centimeters To Liters Problem What is the volume in liters of a cube with sides of 25 centimeters? Solution First, find the volume of the cube.**Note** Volume of a cube (length of side)3Volume in cm3 (25 cm)3Volume in cm3 15625 cm3 Second, convert cm3 to ml1 cm3 1 mlVolume in ml Volume in cm3Volume in ml 15625 ml Third, convert ml to L1 L 1000 ml Set up the conversion to cancel out the desired unit. In this case, we want L to be the remaining unit. volume in L (volume in ml) x (1 L/1000 ml)volume in L (15625/1000) Lvolume in L 15.625 L Answer ï » ¿A cube with 25 cm sides contains 15.625 L of volume. Simple cm3 to L Conversion Example If youre lucky enough to have the original value already in cubic centimeters, conversion to liters is easy. Convert 442.5 cubic centimeters into liters. From the previous example, you should realize a cubic centimeter is the same volume as a milliliter, so: 442.5 cm3 442.5 ml From there, you just need to convert cm3 to liters. 1000 ml 1 L Finally, convert the units. The trick is to check the set-up of the conversion to make sure the ml units cancel out, leaving you with liters for the answer: volume in L (volume in ml) x (1 L/1000 ml)volume in L 442.5 ml x (1 L/1000 ml)volume in L 0.4425 L Note: Whenever a volume (or any reported value) is less than 1, always add the leading zero before the decimal point to make the answer easier to read.
